Spiritual Appetite and its Distinction

Spiritual appetite differs from physical desire. These factors resemble colours painted upon the canvas of the seeker’s existence.

Key Point: Environmental factors such as family, sustenance, and culture play a decisive role in shaping the seeker’s innate capacities.

The Embryo as Potential and Actuality

The embryo, as the initial point of life, constitutes both potential for becoming human and actuality for itself. It is akin to a shell nurturing the pearl of humanity, which attains actuality through growth. The embryo resembles a seed that contains within it the latent potential for perfection as well as the primary actuality necessary for the manifestation of life. This principle emphasises the critical role of the embryo in early development and demonstrates that any deficiency at this stage affects the course of the spiritual journey.

Key Point: The embryo represents both the potential for human development and actuality for itself, holding a crucial role in the beginnings of life.

Influence of Past and Future

Humans have no control over their past; however, through planning for the future, they can shape the trajectory of their spiritual journey. This principle underscores the importance of seizing opportunities in the present, which acts as a bridge connecting past and future. The seeker must, with awareness of this limitation, prepare the beginnings within the present so as to reach the ultimate ends, much like a vigilant traveller taking advantage of the paths available to reach the destination.

Key Point: Humans cannot alter the past, but they can shape their spiritual journey by planning for the future.

The Role of Environment in Human Formation

Environmental factors, ranging from family and societal culture to climatic conditions such as heat and cold, significantly influence the formation of human thoughts and capacities. For example, a person raised in a cold region will differ in appetite and diligence from one nurtured in a warm region. These factors act as hands shaping the clay of human existence, preparing the individual for the spiritual path or hindering it.

Key Point: Environmental factors, including culture, family, and climate, play a critical role in forming the seeker’s thoughts and capacities.

The Three Stages of Training in Mystical Progress

Mystical progress requires three stages of training: environmental training (family), social training (school and society), and classical training (seminary). These stages function as three pillars sustaining the edifice of spiritual development. Environmental training plants the initial seed of knowledge in the seeker’s heart; social training nurtures this seed through interaction with others; and classical training guides it towards scholarly and spiritual perfection. Without these stages, spiritual progress resembles a tree without roots.

Key Point: Mystical progress necessitates three stages of training: environmental, social, and classical.

The Necessity of Social Foundations for Spiritual Progress

A seeker lacking social experience and environmental training will face significant obstacles on the spiritual path. One unaware of society cannot comprehend the unseen, akin to a blind person who has never seen the colours of the world and is deprived of their knowledge. Social experience strengthens awareness of the environment and human interaction, preparing the seeker to enter mystical realms. This principle acts as a bridge guiding the seeker from the outward world to the inner realm.

Key Point: Without social experience and environmental training, the seeker encounters difficulties and limited progress in spiritual development.

The Relationship Between Lineage and Knowledge

The absence of lineage, i.e., roots and foundational background, leads to a lack of knowledge, as the insight of the heart depends upon initial contexts. Lineage functions like the root that nourishes the tree of knowledge; without it, the seeker cannot attain mystical knowledge. This principle serves as a warning for the seeker to reconsider their foundational bases in order to soar towards the peaks of understanding.

Key Point: Absence of lineage results in absence of knowledge, as the heart’s insight relies on foundational contexts.

Difference Between the Seeker and Others

The foundational capacities of the mystic must be far stronger than those of a jurist or philosopher due to the lofty goal of reaching the pinnacle of knowledge. Mystical pursuit resembles a journey to the highest peaks of existence, requiring sturdier foundations than other disciplines. This difference is comparable to the distinction between the foundations of a grand palace and a simple house, each necessitating a base proportionate to its magnitude.

Key Point: The foundations of the mystic must be significantly stronger than those of a jurist or philosopher due to their exalted goal.

The Necessity of Assessing Aptitude

For success in any field, including mysticism, the seeker’s aptitude and foundations must be tested and corrected. Such assessment functions as a trial that evaluates the seeker’s readiness to embark upon the spiritual path. Without it, the seeker may become lost midway, much like a traveller embarking unprepared on a difficult journey.

Key Point: Evaluating aptitude and correcting foundational capacities is essential for success in mystical progress.

Critique of Superficial Mysticism

Some, through superficial study and ostentation, mistakenly assume they have attained mysticism, while without correcting their foundational capacities, they cannot reach true mysticism. Superficial mysticism resembles a garment covering the seeker while leaving the heart devoid of truth. This critique serves as a warning, preventing the seeker from falling into the trap of pretense.

Key Point: Superficial mysticism without correcting foundations does not lead to true mystical knowledge and indicates deficiency in progress.

The Role of Sincerity in Obedience and Its Impact on Progress

The seeker’s actions must be for obedience to God, solely intending the Divine, without regard to taste or pleasure. Sincerity acts as a light purifying the seeker’s heart from carnal darkness, guiding towards genuine obedience. Actions performed with desire or ulterior motive lack sincerity and divert the path of progress.

Key Point: The seeker’s actions must aim solely at obedience to God, without consideration of pleasure or ulterior motive.

The Difference Between Peace and Submission

True Islam, in essence, is peace, implying inner harmony and submission rather than mere outward compliance. Peace resembles a clear stream guiding the seeker’s heart towards unity with the Divine, whereas outward submission may involve coercion. This distinction highlights the elevated status of peace in the path of the Divine saints, transcending outward submission.

Key Point: True Islam is inner peace and harmony, surpassing mere outward submission and shaping the spiritual journey of the saints.

Freedom from Material and Spiritual Desire

The seeker must be free from material gain and spiritual objectives to attain true sincerity. Material gain binds the seeker to worldly attachments, while spiritual objectives, even if oriented toward the hereafter, hinder complete sincerity. The genuine seeker resembles a bird released from all chains, soaring solely towards the Divine.

Key Point: Freedom from material and spiritual objectives is essential for genuine sincerity and spiritual progress.

Critique of Otherworldly Desire

Although desire for the hereafter is superior to worldly desire, it still obstructs complete sincerity. One who abstains from the world solely for the hereafter is still distanced from God due to this desire. This critique warns the seeker to relinquish all forms of desire, even otherworldly desire.

Key Point: Otherworldly desire, though superior to worldly desire, prevents full sincerity in spiritual progress.

Sincerity and Liberation

Sincerity denotes liberation from carnal agency, leading to Divine Unity. Liberation serves as the key unlocking the chains of egotistic polytheism, guiding the seeker to pure love and unity with God. This principle acts as a light leading the seeker from the darkness of self-centredness to the radiance of Unity.

Key Point: Sincerity implies liberation from carnal agency, guiding the seeker towards Divine Unity.

Divine Initiative in Spiritual Progress

The enactment of spiritual progress is performed by God, not by human agency. The seeker serves as a vessel in which God operates, guiding them toward their destination. This principle resembles a breeze lifting the veil of self-absorption and revealing the truth of Divine Unity.

Key Point: Spiritual progress is enacted by God, not by human agency.

Divine and Human Satisfaction

Human satisfaction with God is a consequence of Divine satisfaction. The Qur’anic verse states: “God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.” This verse emphasises the precedence of Divine satisfaction and its impact upon human satisfaction. In the case of sins, this relationship is reversed, as if a mirror reflects truth inversely.

Key Point: Human satisfaction with God results from Divine satisfaction, whereas in sins, this relationship is inverted.

Obedience without Pleasure

Obedience to Divine command must be without regard to pleasure or enjoyment. The seeker must act independently of carnal delights, performing God’s command as a soldier executes the master’s order. This pure obedience purifies the seeker’s heart from attachment.

Key Point: Obedience to Divine command must be devoid of concern for pleasure or gratification.

Peace as the Axis of Obedience

Obedience in spiritual progress is founded on peace, signifying inner harmony rather than coercion. As narrated: “O God, You are Peace; from You comes Peace, and unto You returns Peace.” This peace acts as a stream guiding the seeker’s heart into alignment with Divine command.

Key Point: Obedience in spiritual progress is based on peace and inner harmony, not coercion.

Critique of Coercive Behaviour

Coercive and oppressive actions prevent the realisation of peace and genuine spiritual progress. An embryo formed in coercion cannot reach love and peace. This critique functions as a warning, illuminating the darkness of the ego and safeguarding the seeker from the pitfalls of forceful behaviour.

Key Point: Coercive and oppressive behaviours obstruct genuine peace and spiritual development.

Geometry and Unity in Spiritual Progress

Spiritual progress resembles geometry, connected through unity, not arithmetic, which is characterised by isolated multiplicity. The components of the spiritual path are geometrically interlinked, guiding the seeker from dispersion towards unity. Life patterned after arithmetic leads to scattered elements, ensnaring the seeker in multiplicity, whereas the geometric approach directs towards union with the Divine.

Key Point: Spiritual progress is geometric (connected unity), not arithmetic (isolated multiplicity).

Freedom from Angles

The seeker must detach from angles, i.e., carnal details, focusing on pure love and unity without desire. Angles act as traps diverting the seeker from the primary path. Liberation from these angles resembles a flight from the cage of minutiae towards the sky of unity.

Key Point: Freedom from carnal details guides the seeker towards unity and sincerity.

Complete Freedom from Desire

The true seeker is liberated from all desires, even the desire for God aimed at possession. Desire, even directed towards God, accompanied by the intention of acquisition constitutes polytheism. The seeker should resemble a lover free of desire, thinking only of union with the Beloved. This freedom acts as a key opening the doors of Divine Unity.

Key Point: The true seeker is free from all desires, even desire for God aimed at possession.

The Story of Moses and Sincerity

The Qur’anic verse states: “And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?” (Taha:17) Moses’ response exemplifies sincerity and desireless dialogue with God. He spoke solely out of longing to converse with God, like a lover seeking only union with the Beloved. This story illuminates the path of sincerity for the seeker.
