Interpretation of the Truth of Worship and Prayer: An Examination in the Light of Quranic Verses

Interpretation of the Truth of Worship and Prayer: An Examination in the Light of Quranic Verses

of Nekounam, may his sacred spirit be sanctified (Session Fifty-Three)

Introduction

Worship and prayer, as two fundamental pillars in the epistemological and practical framework of Islam, not only define the human relationship with the Creator but also reflect the harmony of man with the truth of existence. This discourse, relying on the Quranic verses alongside mystical and philosophical contemplations, elucidates the truth of worship as a voluntary alignment with the ontological course of existence and the reality of prayer as a manifestation of this alignment. Furthermore, it investigates the reasons behind the absence of spiritual effects of prayer in some worshippers and, through a critique of traditional and superficial definitions, offers a novel approach. This analysis serves as a beacon illuminating the path for researchers of Quranic sciences towards a deeper understanding of worship and prayer.

Key Point: True worship is the voluntary harmony of man with the ontological course of existence, and prayer reveals its spiritual effects only when accompanied by humility and intimacy.

Section One: The Truth of Worship and the Formal versus Real Distinction

Definition of Worship

Worship, according to this discourse, encompasses two dimensions: ontological descent, which is the inherent movement of all beings towards the Truth, and voluntary ascent, which signifies man's conscious alignment with this ontological course. True worship is realised when man harmonises with the cosmic order and the Divine Reality, akin to a bird that aligns itself with the flow of the wind and ascends to the heights. In contrast, formal worship, devoid of such harmony, remains confined to external actions and lacks spiritual efficacy.

Translation: The seven heavens and the earth and all who are within them glorify Him.

Critique of Traditional Definitions

Traditional definitions of worship, such as intense humility (extreme meekness), are inadequate because they reduce worship to a psychological or superficial state. These definitions confine the truth of worship like a narrow cage, neglecting its existential essence, which is alignment with the cosmic order. Worship transcends words and concepts; it is a dynamic flow that connects man to the truth.

Key Point: True worship is alignment with the cosmic order, not mere external humility or ritualistic acts.

Summary of Section One

In its true sense, worship is the voluntary harmony of man with the ontological course of existence. This definition elevates worship from a ritualistic act to an existential process requiring awareness and sincerity. The critique of traditional definitions emphasises the necessity of re-examining the understanding of worship.

Section Two: Quranic Evidence from Prophet David

Relevant Verses and Interpretation

The Noble Quran illustrates the truth of worship through the example of Prophet David. In Surah An-Naml, verse 16, it is stated:

وَوَرِثَ سُلَيْمَانُ دَاوُودَ ۖ وَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عُلِّمْنَا مَنْطِقَ الطَّيْرِ وَأُوتِينَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ ۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْفَضْلُ الْمُبِينُ

Translation: Solomon inherited David and said, O people, we have been taught the language of the birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is manifest grace.

Also, in Surah Saba, verse 10:

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ مِنَّا فَضْلًا ۖ يَا جِبَالُ أَوِّبِي مَعَهُ وَالطَّيْرَ ۖ وَأَلَنَّا لَهُ الْحَدِيدَ

Translation: And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]. And We made pliable for him iron.

These verses indicate that Davids worship was in harmony with the cosmic order, to the extent that mountains and birds accompanied him. This companionship is like a melody with which the entire universe resonates, transforming worship into an existential flow.

Concrete Analysis

Davids worship, due to its alignment with the ontological course of existence, possessed such grandeur that nature (mountains and birds) harmonised with him. This alignment is akin to a river joining the ocean of truth, signifying true worship whose effects manifest in the world.

Key Point: The worship of Prophet David exemplifies voluntary harmony with the cosmic order that enlists even nature as a companion.

Summary of Section Two

The verses pertaining to Prophet David elucidate worship as alignment with the cosmic order. This harmony, exemplified by the accompaniment of mountains and birds, transforms worship into a potent existential and influential process.

Section Three: The Truth of Prayer and Reasons for the Absence of Its Effects

Prayer and Humility

Prayer, as a clear exemplar of worship, manifests its spiritual effects only when accompanied by humility and intimacy with God. The Noble Quran states:

وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ

Translation: Seek help through patience and prayer; indeed, prayer is difficult except for the humbly submissive.

Humility is like a key that unlocks the hearts seal and transforms prayer from a mechanical act to a spiritual experience. Without humility, prayer remains a prescribed ritual.

Reasons for the Absence of Prayers Effects

Many worshippers are deprived of the spiritual effects of prayer due to the absence of humility and intimacy. Factors such as sin, oppression, backbiting, and harming others obstruct the reality of prayer. These obstacles are like dust that darkens the mirror of the heart and prevents the reflection of divine light.

Key Point: The absence of humility and the presence of sins such as oppression and backbiting are the principal barriers to the efficacy of prayer.

Strategies for Enhancing the Efficacy of Prayer

To render prayer effective, it must be performed with intimacy, love, nearness, and alignment with the cosmic order. Avoidance of sins such as oppression and backbiting, along with creating a tranquil environment for concentration akin to a serene garden for contemplation, are necessary preconditions for this achievement.

Summary of Section Three

Prayer becomes a spiritual experience only when accompanied by humility and the avoidance of moral barriers. This section emphasises the necessity of intimacy and love in prayer and provides practical guidance to improve its quality.

Section Four: Sincerity in Worship and the Meaning of "إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ"

Emphasis on Sincerity

Sincere worship, manifested in the following verse, is the key to attaining the truth of worship:

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

Translation: You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

إِيَّاكَ indicates complete sincerity, whereby worship is performed solely for the Divine Essence, like a flame that burns only to illuminate.

Steadfastness and Worship

Sincere worship engenders steadfastness against disbelief:

أَشِدَّاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ

Translation: Fierce against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves.

This steadfastness is like a shield that preserves faith against falsehood and is the outcome of pure worship.

Key Point: "إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ" signifies absolute sincerity in worship, resulting in steadfastness against falsehood.

Summary of Section Four

Sincerity in worship, embodied in "إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ," transforms worship into a pure and effective act. This sincerity brings about steadfastness against falsehood and compassion among the believers.

Section Five: Critique of Erroneous Views and the Necessity of Reevaluation

Critique of Incorrect Views on Prayer

Certain views attribute the burden of prayer to the arrogance of those who do not pray at all. Such perspectives are like a branch severed from the root of the problem, as the primary issue lies in the lack of humility among worshippers.

Necessity of Reevaluation in Religious Knowledge

The current literature in religious knowledge, relying on ancient concepts and lacking attention to contemporary needs, fails to address modern challenges. This critique is akin to a call for reconstructing educational and exegetical methodologies that must be accompanied by greater depth and precision.

Key Point: Reevaluation of exegetical and educational methods in religious knowledge is essential for a deeper understanding of the truth of prayer and worship.

Summary of Section Five

The critique of erroneous views and the emphasis on the necessity of reevaluation in religious knowledge pave the way for a deeper comprehension of worship and prayer. Such reevaluation must focus on humility and sincerity.

Final Summary

This interpretation, relying on the Quranic verses and mystical contemplations, introduces the truth of worship as voluntary harmony with the ontological course of existence and prayer as a manifestation of this harmony. True worship, beyond superficial definitions, connects man to the truth, and prayer reveals its spiritual effects only through humility and intimacy. The emphasis on sincerity ("إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ") and the critique of erroneous views have transformed this discourse into a valuable foundation for researchers of Quranic sciences. This analysis is like a gem whose brilliance illuminates the path of knowledge and practice.
