Scientific and Exalted Interpretation of the Verse "The Path of Those upon Whom You Have Bestowed Your Grace"

of Nokounam (May his sacred secret be sanctified), Session Ninety-Five

Introduction

The seventh verse of Surah Al-Ftiah,

(Al-Ftiah: 7), meaning "The path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your grace, not [the path] of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray," encompasses one of the most profound Quranic concepts. This verse, by emphasising the bestowal blessings and their relation to guardianship and the perfection of religion, is an invitation to contemplate the divine path of guidance. This treatise, adopting a scientific and spiritual approach, elucidates the bestowal blessings, the position of the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm) in actualising these blessings, and the role of guardianship (wilyah) in the perpetuation of the religion. The objective is to provide a comprehensive and coherent analysis for specialised audiences that, whilst faithful to the Quranic verses, clarifies the theological and mystical dimensions of this verse.

Section One: The Essence of the Bestowal Blessings

1.1 Definition of the Bestowal Blessings

The bestowal blessings are those blessings that are free from constraints, limitations, and dependencies, possessing wholeness and absolute perfection. These blessings, contrary to general blessings such as material bounties, are reserved for a specific group of the Divine friends. The verse,

(An-Nis: 69), meaning "And with those upon whom Allah has bestowed favourfrom the Prophets and the truthful and the martyrs and the righteous," refers to these special blessings.

Key Point: The bestowal blessings, like an unconditional jewel, shine in the hearts of the Divine friends.

1.2 Characteristics of the Bestowal Blessings

Due to the absence of constraints and limitations, the bestowal blessings encompass Divine perfection. These blessings are realised in their highest degree through the guardianship of the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm) and differ from the general blessings accessible to all creatures.

Key Point: The bestowal blessings, like a clear spring, flow solely within the vessel of guardianship.

1.3 The Bestowal Blessings and the Perfection of Religion

The verse,

(Al-Midah: 3), meaning "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion," indicates the bestowal blessing in the perfection of religion.

Key Point: The bestowal blessing, like a crown upon the religion, guarantees its perfection and completeness.

Summary of Section One:

This section elucidated the bestowal blessings as complete and unconditioned blessings realised within the sphere of the guardianship of the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm). These blessings are interconnected with the perfection of the religion and distinguish themselves from general blessings.

Section Two: The Role of Guardianship in the Bestowal Blessings

2.1 Guardianship and the Completion of Religion

The guardianship of the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm) is the fundamental pillar of the bestowal blessings. The verse,

(Al-Baqarah: 150), meaning "Do not fear them but fear Me, and I will complete My favour upon you that you may be guided," emphasises the role of guardianship in the completion of blessing and guidance.

Key Point: Guardianship, like a golden key, opens the doors of the bestowal blessings and guidance.

2.2 The Distinction between لَكُمْ and لَكَ in the Verses

The difference between لَكُمْ (for you [plural]) and لَكَ (for you [singular]) in Quranic verses signifies the universality of the blessing for the Ummah in لَكُمْ and the special role of the Prophet and the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm) in لَكَ. This distinction highlights the centrality of guardianship in realising the bestowal blessings.

Key Point: لَكُمْ and لَكَ, like two mirrors, reflect the generality and particularity of the bestowal blessings.

2.3 The Prophets Reverential Fear and the Preservation of Religion

The Prophets reverential fear in the verse,

(Al-Baqarah: 150), meaning "Do not fear them but fear Me," is not a material fear but rather a reverence regarding harm to the religion and guardianship.

Key Point: The Prophets reverential fear, like a steadfast guardian, protects the religion and guardianship from harms.

2.4 The Heavy Burden of Guardianship

The Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm), as bearers of the bestowal blessings, carry a heavy burden. This burden results from their love and responsibility in preserving the religion, referred to in mysticism as "the killing of the lover" (shiq-kosh).

Key Point: Guardianship, like a heavy load, is placed upon the shoulders of the Infallibles to perfect the religion.

2.5 The Method of Patience and Division in Proving Guardianship

The method of patience and division proves the indispensability of guardianship. Without guardianship, the religion remains incomplete and the bestowal blessings cannot be actualised.

Key Point: The method of patience and division, like a precise measure, demonstrates the necessity of guardianship in the perfection of religion.

Summary of Section Two:

This section clarified the pivotal role of the guardianship of the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm) in realising the bestowal blessings and perfecting the religion. The distinctions of لَكُمْ and لَكَ, the Prophets reverential fear for preserving the religion, and the heavy burden of guardianship all emphasise the significance of guardianship on the path of bestowal blessings.

Section Three: The Bestowal Blessings in the Life of Faith

3.1 The Bestowal Blessings in the Contexts of Revelation and Elevation

The bestowal blessings, within the context of revelation (general), are accessible to the entire Ummah, whereas in the context of elevation (specific), they belong solely to the Infallibles and the special Divine friends.

Key Point: The bestowal blessings, like a two-sided gem, exhibit different radiance in the contexts of revelation and elevation.

3.2 The Role of Blessing in the Expansion of the Life of Faith

Life with blessing (nimah) brings expansion and flexibility, whereas entrapment in negation and obsession ("l") restricts and hardens life. The Prophet , as the epitome of blessing, is a complete exemplar of this expansion.

Key Point: Blessing, like a soul-refreshing breeze, brings expansion and light to the life of faith.

3.3 Critique of Unscientific Mentalities in Interpretation

Unscientific and popular mentalities obstruct the deep understanding of Quranic verses. For example, neglecting the distinction between لَكُمْ and لَكَ in the verse of Al-Midah disrupts the precise comprehension of the bestowal blessings.

Key Point: Unscientific mentality, like a veil of dust upon a mirror, prevents the reflection of the light of Quranic verses.

3.4 Practical Experience in Religious Propagation

Propagation of religion necessitates psychology and understanding of the audience. An experience in the city of Abhar showed that presenting challenging discussions (such as apparent denial of God) can lead the audience towards contemplation and acceptance of truth. This method, by creating mental expansion, guides individuals towards faith.

Key Point: Religious propagation, like skillful gardening, plants the seeds of faith in hearts by knowing the audience.

3.5 The Necessity of Expansion in Propagation

If propagation of religion is accompanied by a spirit of negation and "l," it becomes arduous and constrained. Conversely, a positive spirit and blessing bring expansion and influence.

Key Point: Expansion in propagation, like a luminous key, opens the hearts of the audience towards the truth.

Summary of Section Three:

This section emphasised the role of the bestowal blessings in expanding the life of faith and the necessity of a scientific approach in the interpretation and propagation of religion. Practical experience and mental expansion illustrate the importance of a positive spirit in guiding towards the path of bestowal blessings.

Final Summary

The verse,

like a shining jewel in Surah Al-Ftiah, is an invitation towards the path of bestowal blessings which is connected with the guardianship of the Infallibles (Alayhim al-Salm) and the perfection of religion. The bestowal blessings, as complete and unrestricted blessings, are actualised within the sphere of guardianship and distinguish themselves from general blessings. The role of guardianship in the completion of religion, the Prophets reverential fear to preserve the religion, and the heavy burden of the Infallibles all emphasise the importance of these blessings. Propagation of religion with a positive spirit and expansion paves the way for a deeper understanding of these blessings. This interpretation, by critiquing unscientific mentalities and stressing a precise and scientific approach, invites the audience to contemplate the levels of Divine blessings and the role of guardianship in their realisation.
