Scientific and Epistemological Analysis of the Quranic Concepts of Earth and Heavens

Introduction

The Holy Quran, as a revealed and comprehensive source, serves not only as a moral and spiritual guide for humanity but also opens a window towards scientific and ontological knowledge that demands a novel and interdisciplinary perspective for profound understanding. Verse 117 of Surah Al-Baqarah, emphasising the Originator of the heavens and the earth, points to the unparalleled creation of the heavens and the earth and invites contemplation on the attributes and characteristics of these two fundamental elements of existence. This treatise, adopting a scientific and epistemological approach, explores the concepts of Earth and Heavens in the Holy Quran and, through precise analyses, underscores the necessity of revising traditional methods of studying religious sciences and fostering synergy with modern sciences. The objective is to present an interpretation that is both illuminating and inspiring for researchers in Quranic sciences as well as scholars in the natural and human sciences. The structure of this work is systematically organised, with thematic sections meticulously examining each aspect of the discussed verses and elucidating the semantic connections between Quranic concepts and contemporary knowledge through supplementary explanations.

Section One: The Necessity of a Scientific Approach to the Verses of Earth and Heavens

Transformation in Methods of Studying Religious Sciences

The examination of the concepts of Earth and Heavens in the Holy Quran transcends the traditional frameworks of religious sciences, which have often focused on subjective generalities and abstract notions. This limitation stems from the absence of a systematic linkage between religious knowledge and empirical sciences. The Holy Quran, as a comprehensive book, not only addresses the spiritual guidance of humanity but also, through its scientific allusions, provides a platform for exploring the mysteries of existence. To comprehend these allusions, it is imperative to establish scientific and research centres collaboratively involving religious scholars and natural scientists. Such cooperation must be based on scientific concord rather than mere publicity gatherings, as non-scientific assemblies that only fill media pages fail to resolve humanitys epistemological issues.

Key Point: Understanding the Quranic verses related to Earth and Heavens requires long-term, collaborative research projects between religious sciences and global sciences, capable of transforming human knowledge in these domains.

Critique of Current Limitations in Religious Science

Traditional educational systems in religious seminaries, due to their focus on recitation, Tajwd, memorisation, and chanting of the Quran, have neglected its scientific and epistemological content. While these are valuable, they constitute only the adornment of the Quranic words and alone cannot fulfil the Qurans scientific guidance mission. Quranic guidance extends beyond ritualistic acts such as prayer and fasting to include directives for exploration across all scientific domains of humanity. This deficiency highlights the urgent need to revise educational methodologies and integrate modern sciences into curricula.

Synergy Between Religious and Global Sciences

Advancement in understanding Quranic verses is unattainable without utilising achievements of global contemporary sciences. Modern disciplines, ranging from geology to cosmology, have provided tools that can be instrumental in analysing verses related to Earth and Heavens. Such synergy not only enriches religious epistemology but also consolidates the Holy Qurans position as a revealed and pioneering source in the contemporary world.

Conclusion of Section One

The verses concerning Earth and Heavens invite reconsideration of methods in studying religious sciences and the establishment of deep connections with modern sciences. This transformation demands founding joint scientific centres, revising educational systems, and abandoning non-scientific approaches. Such a strategy not only facilitates deeper comprehension of the Holy Quran but also can guide human sciences on a novel path.

Section Two: Analysis of Verses Related to Earth and Heavens

Khisf al-Ard: The Earths Sinking

أَفَأَمِنَ الَّذِينَ مَكَرُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ أَنْ يَخْسِفَ اللَّهُ بِهِمُ الْأَرْضَ

Translation: Do those who plot evil feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up?

The concept of Khisf al-Ard (the sinking of the earth) refers to the earths subsidence, which can include geological phenomena such as earthquakes, sinkholes, or other forms of terrestrial disruption. These phenomena, cited in the Holy Quran as signs of divine power and warnings to humanity, require scientific analysis within the field of geology. Khisf is not limited to earthquakes but encompasses various types of geological disturbances, each possessing distinct characteristics and consequences.

Kharq al-Ard: The Splitting of the Earth

إِنَّكَ لَنْ تَخْرِقَ الْأَرْضَ وَلَنْ تَبْلُغَ الْجِبَالَ طُولًا

Translation: You will never pierce the earth, nor will you reach the mountains in height.

The phrase lan takhriq al-ard denotes the limitations of mankind in the era of the Prophet with respect to penetrating the earths depths. While demonstrating humanitys incapacity at that time, the verse simultaneously alludes to the possibility of achieving this feat in the future with technological progress. The term kharq literally means deeply splitting the earth, which has been partially realised today through advanced drilling technologies. Nevertheless, mankind has yet to reach the earths core, which illustrates the Quranic foresight. This verse is among the Quranic unseen phenomena that hint at the probable future realisation of penetrating the earth, rather than an absolute negation of human capability.

Key Point: The phrase lan takhriq means you do not (now) do rather than you cannot, indicating Quranic predictions about future scientific advancements.

Laff al-Ard: The Gathering of Groups on Earth

اسْكُنُوا الْأَرْضَ فَإِذَا جَاءَ وَعْدُ الْآخِرَةِ جِئْنَا بِكُمْ لَفِيفًا

Translation: Dwell in the earth, and when the promise of the Hereafter comes, We will bring you forth in multitudes.

Laff al-Ard refers to the gathering of various groups on earth at the time of the Hereafter. This concept, connected to metaphysical transformations of the earth at Resurrection, requires reflection on theological and cosmological dimensions. Earth, as the habitat of human life, is portrayed in this verse as the location of the ultimate gathering of beings.

Creation of Earth in Two Days

قُلْ أَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَكْفُرُونَ بِالَّذِي خَلَق
