Section One: The Text and Translation of Ayat al-Kursi

The Verse Text

Translation

Allah there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Significance of Ayat al-Kursi

Ayat al-Kursi, as the crown upon the verses of the Holy Quran, embodies the manifestation of monotheism and divine knowledge. This verse, through its tripartite structure of names, pronouns, and attributes, offers a comprehensive schema for understanding the Essence, attributes, and actions of the Divine, guiding the seekers both cosmically and introspectively.

Owing to its unparalleled status within Quranic sciences, this verse has long attracted the attention of religious scholars, and its analysis demands profound and continuous study. The vastness of its meanings and structural complexity require at least six months of dedicated investigation, indicative of the immeasurable depth of this Quranic jewel.

Section Two: The Tripartite Structure of Ayat al-Kursi

Nominal Trajectory

Within its structure, Ayat al-Kursi encompasses three principal trajectories: names, pronouns, and attributes. The nominal trajectory, which constitutes the central core of the verse, comprises divine names positioned at the beginning and end of the verse:

The divine names in Ayat al-Kursi shine like luminous stars in the sky of knowledge, each playing a distinct role in explicating the Essence and attributes of God. Allah and Huwa, as two simple essences, form the axis of the Greatest Name, while Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum signify the life and sustainability of existence.

The names in this verse are categorised into seven items: Allah, Ilah, Huwa, Hayy, Qayyum, Aliyy, and Azim. Structurally, these names are divided into simple (Allah, Huwa), compound (La ilaha illa Huwa), dotted (Qayyum), doubled (Qayyum), and locative (Al-Hayy). Allah, as the vessel of unity, and Huwa, as the vessel of oneness, play pivotal roles in the Greatest Name, while the other names fit precisely within this structure through exact calculations.

Pronominal Trajectory

The pronouns of Ayat al-Kursi, comprising eight instances (notably Huwa and Lahu), serve as connectors between the names and attributes. One such pronoun (Lahu ma fi as-samawat) contains the letter lam, which holds a significant role in the numerical structure of the verse. These pronouns, akin to luminous threads, bind the names and attributes, reinforcing the systematic coherence of the verse.

The pronouns, functioning as bridges between the names and attributes, ensure the unity and coherence of the verse. The eight pronouns, with a numerical value of seventy, signify the interconnectedness and comprehensiveness of the verses structure.

Attributive Trajectory

The seven attributes described in Ayat al-Kursi delineate the characteristics of the Divine Essence:

These attributes, like mirrors, reflect various manifestations of the Divine Essence. The seven attributes, ranging from life and sustenance to knowledge and power, reveal the comprehensiveness of the attributes of the Exalted Lord.

By describing divine characteristics, these attributes impart depth and spiritual richness to the verse and establish its position as a source of knowledge and divine power.

Summary of Section Two

The tripartite structure of Ayat al-Kursicomprising names, pronouns, and attributesforms a solid edifice delineating monotheism in its multifaceted dimensions. The names, as the core of knowledge; the pronouns, as connectors; and the attributes, as descriptors collectively constitute a coherent and comprehensive system that guides the seekers on the path to divine cognition.

Section Three: Numerical and Letter-Based Analysis of Ayat al-Kursi

Numerical Value of the Names

A prominent feature of Ayat al-Kursi is its numerical and letter-based system, which holds a central role in the mystical and scientific analysis of the Holy Quran. The numerical values of the opening and closing names of the verse are as follows:
