the Lectures of Nokounam, may his sacred soul rest in peace (Session 1029)
The Holy Quran, like a guiding lamp, illuminates the path of truth and salvation for humanity. Verses 154 and 155 of Surah Al-Imran, with eloquent and profound expression, portray the divine covenant with the Children of Israel, their disobedience, and the consequences of such rebellion. This treatise, through an in-depth examination of these verses, elucidates the steadfast divine pact, the disbelief and hardness of heart of the people, the wrongful accusations against Lady Mary (peace be upon her), and the hardships faced by the Prophets and the believers. Its purpose is to explain these verses in a lofty style and coherent structure for seekers of divine knowledge, so that, like a mirror, they reflect the truth of disobedience and the boundless mercy of God.
Key Point: The solemn covenant was a firm pact between God and the Children of Israel which, through heavy devotional and ethical commitments, served as a test of their faith and adherence to the Divine will.
And We raised over them the Mount (Tur) in firmness of their covenant, and We said to them, Enter the gate prostrating, and We said to them, Do not transgress on the Sabbath, and We took from them a solemn covenant.
Verse 154 of Surah Al-Imran, as a prominent engraving upon the tablet of history, speaks of a firm covenant God made with the Children of Israel. This covenant, accompanied by the raising of Mount Tur above them and commands such as entering the gate in prostration and observing the Sabbath, symbolised the seriousness and grandeur of the divine commitment. This pact, like an iron bond, compelled the people to obey the divine commandments and to accept heavy devotional and ethical responsibilities. However, instead of humility towards this covenant, the Children of Israel revealed their ignorance and deficiency in knowledge by making unreasonable demands such as witnessing God directly or the revelation of a scripture firsthand. These demands, like a heavy stone indicating failure in aiming true, reflected their lack of understanding of divine reality and the limitations of human existence.
From a theological perspective, the solemn covenant was not merely a devotional obligation but a test to gauge the extent of the peoples adherence to the will of God. This covenant, also mentioned in other verses such as those of Surah Al-Maidah, provided a stage for the manifestation of faith or disobedience among the people. The illogical requests of the people, like a mirror, displayed their superficiality and arrogance before divine grandeur.
The solemn covenant, as a heavenly pact, called the Children of Israel towards obedience and piety. Yet, their ignorance and unreasonable demands acted as a barrier to guidance, blocking the path of faith for many. This section emphasises the importance of commitment to divine obligations and humility before the will of God.
Key Point: The breach of the covenant and disbelief in the divine signs were the results of the peoples voluntary choice to turn away from the truth, which led to a sealing of their hearts.
Then, for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of God and their killing of the Prophets without right and their saying, Our hearts are wrapped, indeed, God has set a seal upon them because of their disbelief, so they do not believe except for a few.
Verse 155 of Surah Al-Imran recounts, in a bitter tale of human rebellion, the breach of the covenant, disbelief in divine signs, and the unjust killing of Prophets. The Children of Israel, by trampling upon the firm divine covenant, chose the path of disbelief and disobedience. Their unreasonable demands, such as wishing to see God, stemmed not from genuine inquiry but from ignorance and pride. These rebellions, like a tempest that shatters the ship of faith, led the people towards hardness of heart and deprivation of guidance.
From a doctrinal viewpoint, the breach of the covenant and disbelief in divine signs was the result of the peoples free choice to turn away from the truth. The concept of God setting a seal upon their hearts in the Holy Quran signifies the sealing of the hearts due to persistent disbelief. This sealing is not a divine imposition but a natural consequence of human rebellion, which, like a heavy shadow, distances the light of guidance from the heart. This notion aligns with other verses such as verse 88 of Surah Al-Baqarah, which states that human disbelief is the result of their own deeds.
The breach of the covenant and disbelief in divine signs, like a deep wound on the body of faith, deprived the Children of Israel of divine guidance. This section stresses the importance of adherence to divine covenants and avoidance of pride and ignorance, so that humans may remain humble and receptive to the truth.
Key Point: The unjust killing of Prophets and the claim of hardness of heart were indicative of the utmost deviation of the Children of Israel from the path of divine guidance.
The Holy Quran, continuing in verse 155, speaks of the unjust killing of Prophets. This act was neither a justified defence nor legitimate warfare but blatant oppression and a sign of the highest degree of rebellion among the people. The Children of Israel, by killing the Prophets, who shone as beacons of guidance in the darkness of ignorance, paved their own way towards darkness and misguidance. Their claim that our hearts are locked and that no instruction affects them acted like a stone wall, preventing the penetration of the light of guidance. God, due to their disbelief and disobedience, sealed their hearts so that except for a few, they did not believe.
From historical and theological perspectives, the killing of Prophets is among the grievous sins condemned repeatedly in the Quran, such as in verse 112 of Surah Al-Imran. This act was not only a breach of the covenant but also a manifestation of arrogance and hostility towards the bearers of divine revelation. The claim of hardness of heart, which the people used as an excuse to reject guidance, was the outcome of their free choice to turn away from the truth. This hardness, like a hardened bone, rendered the heart incapable of receiving the light of faith.
The killing of Prophets and hardness of heart, as signs of deep deviation, led the Children of Israel away from the path of guidance. This section emphasises the necessity of respect for Gods saints and avoidance of obstinacy and arrogance, so that the human heart may be as a clear mirror receptive to the light of guidance.
Key Point: The unjust accusation against Lady Mary (peace be upon her) was a manifestation of the utmost hardness of heart and denial of a divine miracle, constituting a sin graver than mere transgression.
And because of their disbelief and their saying against Mary a grave falsehood.
The Holy Quran, in the continuation of verse 155, mentions the grave slander the Children of Israel cast upon Lady Mary (peace be upon her). This accusation, rooted in doubts about the birth of Jesus (peace be upon him), was not only an injustice to a sacred personality but also a denial of a divine miracle. Lady Mary (peace be upon her), who is introduced in Surah Maryam as a symbol of chastity and piety, was nurtured under divine protection and within the house of God. Nevertheless, the Children of Israel, with hardened hearts and ignorance, accused her of sin. This slander, like a dagger to the heart of truth, signified the utmost moral and spiritual deviation of the people.
From a theological viewpoint, the accusation against Lady Mary (peace be upon her) was not merely an injustice towards a holy figure but also a denial of divine miracles and a manifestation of disbelief and obstinacy. This act, described in the Quran as a grave slander, is a sin more severe than mere transgression because it stems from ignorance and hardness of heart. These accusations, like dark clouds, obscured the light of truth from the peoples sight and deprived them of guidance.
The unjust accusation against Lady Mary (peace be upon her), as a sign of hardness of heart, blinded the Children of Israel to divine truth. This section stresses the necessity of respect for Gods saints and avoidance of slander and denial of miracles, so that humans may be humble and seekers of truth before reality.
Key Point: God employed all His resourcesfrom Prophets and miracles to His saintsfor the guidance of humanity, yet human pride and ignorance hindered acceptance of this guidance.
The Holy Quran, referring to the hardships endured by the Prophets and believers from the Children of Israel, speaks of resistance rooted in hardness of heart and disbelief. The Prophets, like torches of guidance, stood against the darkness of ignorance, but the people chose the path of misguidance by killing them and slandering Gods saints such as Lady Mary (peace be upon her). God sent Prophets, Imams, miracles, and saints like Mary (peace be upon her) as His entire investment for human guidance. Yet, humans, with pride and ignorance, like a lost traveller in a desert, rejected this guidance.
From the philosophy of religion perspective, this divine investment, also mentioned in verses like 213 of Surah Al-Baqarah, signifies the boundless mercy of God. Nonetheless, human free will in accepting or rejecting truth plays a decisive role. The disobedience of the Children of Israel, like a mirror, reveals human ignorance and arrogance before divine guidance.
The hardships of the Prophets and divine investment for guidance testify to Gods mercy and opened the path of salvation for humanity. Yet, pride and ignorance acted as a firm barrier to accepting this guidance. This section highlights the importance of humility and acceptance of truth
