Interpretation: Light and the Clear Book in the Guidance of Nations

Interpretation: Light and the Clear Book in the Guidance of Nations

Excerpted from the Lectures of Nokounam (Session 1059)

Preface

The Holy Quran, akin to a radiant lamp, has illuminated the path of guidance for past and future nations, and has sent forth the divine prophets as the torchbearers of this path. The fifteenth verse of Surah Al-Maidah, with a direct address to the People of the Book, speaks of the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who, as a light from the Lord, reveals the concealed truths of the heavenly scriptures and brings forth the Clear Book. This treatise, through contemplation upon this noble verse and the discourses of religious scholars, examines the role of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Holy Quran in rectifying religious deviations and guiding societies, exploring the dimensions of this mission through historical and theological lenses. The goal is to elucidate the exalted status of the Holy Quran and the Prophet (peace be upon him) in human guidance, with the hope that, like a sturdy tree, religious knowledge may take root in hearts.

Address to the People of the Book and the Mission of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)

Key Point: Rectification of the Deviations of the People of the Book

The address O People of the Book in the fifteenth verse of Surah Al-Maidah is an invitation to the Jews and Christians to return to the path of divine guidance through the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who, like a clear mirror, unveils the deviations and concealments in the heavenly scriptures.

O People of the Book, truly Our Messenger has come to you to make clear to you much of what you used to conceal from the Book, and He pardons much. A light has indeed come to you from Allah, and a Clear Book.

This noble verse, through a direct address to the People of the Book, namely Jews and Christians, introduces the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This mission, like a breeze that sweeps dust off the mirror of truth, undertakes the correction of religious deviations. The Prophet (peace be upon him), by revealing hidden truths in previous heavenly scriptures such as the Psalms, the Scrolls, and the Gospel, carries a grave responsibility. These truths, which were sometimes deliberately concealed or distorted, include signs of the Prophets (peace be upon him) prophethood and the original meanings of the heavenly books. This rectification is not merely exposing concealments but an invitation to return to the true path of divine guidance.

Revealing the Hidden Truths

The phrase He makes clear to you much of what you used to conceal from the Book emphasises the Prophets (peace be upon him) duty to elucidate a substantial portion of the hidden truths. Such concealment, which sometimes entailed distortion of meanings or omission of parts of the sacred texts, constituted an obstacle to divine guidance. The Prophet (peace be upon him), like an explorer uncovering a buried treasure, brings these truths to light for the People of the Book. This role aligns with other verses in the Holy Quran that underscore the guidance provided by the prophets and illustrates the central position of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in reconstructing genuine faith.

Prophetic Clemency and Wisdom

The noble verse, through the expression and pardons much, speaks of the wisdom and mercy of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in overlooking certain concealments. This pardon, like a sea that absorbs turbulent waves, prevents unnecessary tensions. Rather than exposing all distortions, the Prophet (peace be upon him) focuses on rectifying critical aspects and facilitates the path of guidance with gentle exhortation. This approach reflects the prophetic conduct which has linked the invitation to religion with softness and wisdom.

Divine Light and the Clear Book

Key Point: Light and Book as Divine Guidance

The Light, interpreted as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the Clear Book, which is the Holy Quran, serve as two wings enabling the nations flight towards eternal felicity. These two form the foundation of the divine mission and dispel the darkness of ignorance.

The phrase A light has indeed come to you from Allah and a Clear Book denotes the arrival of a divine light and a clarifying book. The light, identified with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is akin to a torch that pierces the darkness of ignorance and illuminates the path of guidance. The Clear Book, namely the Holy Quran, is a document that, with unparalleled eloquence and clarity, explicates divine truths. These two elements, like the sun and the moon in the sky of guidance, complement each other and consummate the divine mission.

Dynamics of Divine Light

Divine light, unlike iron which is fixed and immutable, is a dynamic phenomenon. This light, like a flame influenced by the wind, may weaken, increase, or even extinguish. This dynamism depends on the acceptance and practice of the nation. Should the society turn away from the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him), this light diminishes or is extinguished. This concept, like a mirror, reflects the responsibility of the nation to preserve and safeguard divine guidance.

Rejection of the Light and the Book

Regrettably, not only the People of the Book but also some Muslims turned away from the light of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Clear Book. This turning away, like extinguishing a lamp in a dark night, deprived religious communities of guidance. Jews and Christians, through concealment and distortion of the heavenly scriptures, and some Muslims, by neglecting adherence to the Holy Quran, have dimmed this light. These deviations serve as a warning to all nations to protect the divine trust.

Compilation of the Holy Quran and Historical Issues

Key Point: Compilation of the Quran in Early Islam

During the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the Holy Quran was preserved orally, and its written compilation took place after his demise. This process has provided a basis for theological discussions regarding the authenticity and preservation of the Quran.

In early Islam, the Holy Quran was memorised in the hearts and no complete written copy existed. After the Prophets passing, this divine speech was gathered from the memories of the memorizers. This process, like collecting scattered gems from a vast ocean, was accompanied by difficulties and disagreements. Some maintain that if this compilation had been conducted by a figure such as the Commander of the Faithful (Ali), it would have had greater credibility. However, history shows that the Caliphs undertook this responsibility, which has led to theological debates between Shia and Sunni schools.

The Issue of Quranic Distortion

One of the theological issues addressed in the lectures is the subject of distortion of the Holy Quran. Some Shia, based on narrations, refer to the possibility of verbal or semantic alteration of the Quran, while Sunnis emphasise its complete protection. This divergence, like two branches of a river, stems from methodological differences in interpreting religious texts. Nevertheless, the Holy Quran, despite these discussions, remains a clear spring and source of guidance.

Criticisms Directed at the Holy Quran

The lectures mention thousands of criticisms directed at the Holy Quran but emphasise that these objections do not preclude the use of this divine book. The Holy Quran, like a robust tree, continues to bear the fruits of guidance despite critiques. This perspective underscores the supreme value of the Holy Quran in human guidance, even if some aspects are disputed.

Guidance of the Holy Quran and the Role of the Imams (Peace Be Upon Them)

Key Point: The Role of the Imams in Preserving the Quran

The Infallible Imams (peace be upon them), by acting upon the Holy Quran and advising their disciples to recite it, have confirmed the legitimacy of this heavenly book. This act, like a divine signature, guarantees the guiding value of the Quran.

The Infallible Imams (peace be upon them), aware of the possibility of distortion, nevertheless acted in accordance with the Holy Quran and encouraged their disciples to recite it. This conduct, akin to endorsing the correctness of the Qurans guidance, demonstrates its lofty status. Had the Imams (peace be upon them) privately advised their followers to abstain from reading the Quran, todays situation would be different. Instead, like gardeners nurturing a sapling, they preserved and propagated the Holy Quran.

Rejection of the Primitive View of the Holy Quran

Some claim that the Holy Quran belongs to a primitive society and is insufficient for contemporary times. This view, like ignoring the sun on a clear day, is far from the truth. The Holy Quran is a source from which the unseen world can be comprehended and truths discovered. This book, like an infinite ocean, has the capacity to guide all eras and, with profound understanding, can illuminate lifes path.

The Holy Quran as a Book of Music

The Holy Quran, with its unique phonetic and musical structure, has been described as the greatest book of music. This book, through its auditory modes, conveys deep meanings, which, upon contemplation, reveal even possible distortions. This metaphor serves as a bridge between the eloquence and clarity of the Holy Quran, displaying its beauty and profundity.

Inability to Benefit from the Holy Quran

Key Point: Weakness in Understanding the Quran

Some religious scholars, despite their mastery of other sciences, have been unable to benefit from the Holy Quran and have resorted to simpler methods such as divination and prayer beads. This situation highlights the necessity of a deeper understanding of the Quran.

Certain religious scholars, notwithstanding their scholarly status, have struggled to comprehend and utilise the Holy Quran. Instead of employing this heavenly book for guidance, they have turned to methods like divination or rosaries. This attitude, akin to disregarding a precious treasure, signifies a deficiency in Quranic sciences. The Holy Quran, with its immense capacities, demands profound and specialised understanding to indicate the lines of guidance to the nation.

A Thousand Cities of the Quran

The expression a thousand cities of the Quran, like a skyscraper of knowledge, refers to the depth and breadth of Quranic teachings. This book, like a vast city, encompasses multiple layers of wisdom and knowledge. However, regrettably, these teachings have been less explored and explicated. This metaphor is an invitation to researchers to dive into this boundless ocean and reveal its treasures.

Similarity in the Behaviour of Religious Communities

Jews, Christians, and some Muslims have exhibited similar behaviour in concealing and neglecting the heavenly scriptures. This similarity, like a mirror, reflects the common deviations of religious communities. All three groups, despite receiving divine guidance, resorted to concealing truths and distorting meanings. This issue serves as a warning to all nations to preserve the divine trust and not deviate from the path of guidance.

Summary

The fifteenth verse of Surah Al-Maidah, with a direct address to the People of the Book, introduces the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Holy Quran as the Light and the Clear Book. This verse highlights the Prophets role in revealing hidden truths and rectifying religious deviations. Nevertheless, the rejection of this guidance by the People of the Book and some Muslims has led to the dimming of the divine light. The theological debates regarding the distortion of the Holy Quran, the role of the Imams (peace be upon them) in its preservation, and the vast capacities of this book for guidance are key aspects of these reflections. The Holy Quran, like an infinite ocean, remains a guide in all eras and requires deep understanding and continuous practice to manifest its teachings, like a great city. This treatise is an invitation to reconsider approaches to the Holy Quran and to utilise it for individual and social guidance.
