Verses 54 and 55 of Surah Al-Ma'idah in the Holy Quran shine forth as a luminous beacon guiding the believers on the path of faith, wilayah (divine guardianship), and humility. These verses, expressed in a celestial tone, speak of the characteristics of Gods chosen people and the true saints, emphasising love, modesty, and steadfast adherence to religious principles. The present discourse, relying on scholarly lectures and profound analyses, endeavours to elucidate these verses. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive interpretation that, like a pure stream, conveys the deep Quranic meanings to the reader without diminishing the universality and comprehensiveness of the verses. This text, structured methodically and written in a dignified style, strives to present the concepts with scientific precision and eloquent expression to its audience.
The verses of the Holy Quran, particularly verses 54 and 55 of Surah Al-Ma'idah, possess a boundless oceanic nature with a general, social, and human essence. These verses are neither confined to a particular individual nor dependent on a specific time or place. They serve as a transparent mirror, guiding human societies on the path of guidance and are free from any reduction to individual instances or particular narratives. This universality renders the verses an eternal source for human education and societal reform.
The verses under discussion, located in Surah Al-Ma'idaha chapter abundant in legal rulings and social guidancewarn the believers and delineate the features of the chosen people and the divine saints. These verses, like stars in the firmament of knowledge, illuminate the path to true faith.
Translation: O you who have believed, whoever among you turns back from his religion, Allah will bring forth a people He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, stern toward the disbelievers, striving in the cause of Allah and not fearing the blame of any critic. That is the favour of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
Verse 54 begins with the address (O you who have believed), cautioning the believers against the danger of apostasy. This warning serves as a wake-up call, urging the believers to preserve their faith and avoid weakness in their religious convictions. God promises that, should apostasy occur, He will replace them with another people, indicating Divine self-sufficiency and independence from the faith of particular individuals. This message reminds that faith is not a fixed state but a dynamic current requiring vigilant care.
The replacement people in this verse are introduced with eminent attributes, each shining like a gem in the crown of faith:
يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ): This love represents an unbreakable bond between the believers heart and the Creator, elevating faith to its purest state. This trait acts like a refreshing breeze, drawing the hearts of believers closer together. This firmness signifies defence of truth and steadfastness against falsehood. Jihad, like a sharp sword, demonstrates practical commitment to religion. This quality, akin to a strong shield, protects the believer from undue influence of unjust criticism. These attributes transform the chosen people into a social group, not a particular individual, united and committed to divine values. Historically, such a people have not fully manifested in Judaism, Christianity, or Islam.
A question arising from this verse concerns the identity of this people. Have they appeared historically or not? This ambiguity invites the reader to reflect and search for possible instances. Nonetheless, it appears that the true chosen people, in their complete form, have yet to fully materialise within religious communities and may emerge in the future.
(That is the favour of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills) refers to the Divine grace granted to the particular people. This grace, like a bountiful rain, descends upon those whom God wills. Although this grace is ascribed to the chosen people, its vastness indicates the infinite mercy of God.
Verse 54 of Surah Al-Ma'idah, in profound language, warns against apostasy and enumerates the characteristics of the chosen people. This verse acts as a bright torch, illuminating the path of faith, love, and humility, and urging believers to persevere on the path of truth.
Translation: Your only guardians are Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believedthose who establish prayer and give zakat while they are bowing (in worship).
Verse 55 limits guardianship to three groups: God, His Messenger, and believers possessing specific qualities. The guardianship in this verse, like a clear stream, signifies closeness, love, and companionship, rather than legal or political guardianship. This guardianship is a spiritual relationship linking the believer to God and the Messenger, calling him or her towards righteous deeds.
The believers deserving guardianship in this verse are defined by three traits:
يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ): Prayer acts as a bridge between the servant and the Creator, establishing spiritual connection. Zakat signifies attention to the needy and charity in the way of God. This feature denotes modesty in charity and avoidance of arrogance. These qualities form three steadfast pillars that distinguish true believers from hypocrites and manifest genuine faith.
A creative concept presented is the triad of Prayer, Need, and Grace:
