Interpretation: Spiritual Deafness and Ontological Unity of Nations in Verses 37 and 38 of Surah Al-Anm

the Lectures of Nekounam, (Session 1170)

Preface

The Holy Quran, like a pure and boundless spring, pours divine knowledge into receptive hearts and invites humankind to contemplate the system of creation and their own place within it. Verses 37 and 38 of Surah Al-Anm, with profound and penetrating expression, speak of humanitys spiritual deafness towards divine signs and the ontological unity among beings. This treatise, through reflection on these two noble verses, endeavours to present their elevated meanings in a systematic and research-appropriate format with clear and dignified language. The aim is not merely to elucidate Quranic concepts but also to encourage the reader to contemplate human position within the cosmic order and their responsibility before the Creator.

Section One: Spiritual Deafness towards Divine Signs
Exegesis of Verse 37 of Surah Al-Anm

"And they say, 'Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?' Say: Indeed, Allah is capable of sending down a sign, but most of them do not know."

This noble verse refers to the objection of the disbelievers who demanded specific and tangible signs to accept the divine message, whereas the divine signs abundantly surrounded them. Spiritual deafness and ignorance acted as a veil upon their hearts and intellects, preventing them from perceiving these signs. Allah, with wise expression, emphasises His boundless power to send down signs, yet it is human ignorance that bars the path to understanding the truth.

Key point: Spiritual deafness stems from ignorance and lack of insight. Divine signs, manifest in revelation and nature, suffice to guide humankind; however, their acceptance requires a prepared heart and an awakened intellect.

Critique of Incapacity to Comprehend the Signs

The disbelievers not only failed to recognise the divine signs but were incapable of comprehending their presence within the cosmic system. This incapacity is akin to a darkness that conceals the light of truth from their eyes. The Holy Quran, like a radiant lamp, illuminates the path, yet only those whose inner eyes are open can benefit from this light. This critique invites humankind to reflect upon their limitations and the necessity of spiritual insight.

The Boundless Power of Allah

The phrase Indeed, Allah is capable of sending down a sign resembles a mirror reflecting divine grandeur. Allah is Omnipotent without any limitation in sending down signs, but it is humans who must prepare themselves with knowledge and faith to receive these signs. This balance between divine power and human responsibility acts like two wings enabling humankind to soar towards perfection.

Summary of Section One

Verse 37 of Surah Al-Anm, by clarifying humanitys spiritual deafness and Allahs boundless power, teaches us that the truth is accessible, yet its comprehension depends on the readiness of heart and mind. Ignorance acts as a barrier preventing humanity from benefiting from divine guidance. This section calls for self-awareness and endeavour to open the doors of insight.

Section Two: Ontological Unity of Nations and Perfection of the Creation System
Exegesis of Verse 38 of Surah Al-Anm

"And there is no creature on earth nor a bird flying with its two wings but they are communities like you. We have not neglected in the Book a thing; then to their Lord they will be gathered."

This noble verse opens a window to the truth of ontological unity among beings. All terrestrial creatures and flying birds are nations sharing commonality with humans within the divine system. This unity manifests not only in existential structure but also in accountability and eventual return to the Creator. The phrase We have not neglected in the Book a thing serves as a testimony to the perfection of the creation system, in which no deficiency or flaw is permissible.

Key point: All beings, from terrestrial creatures to aerial birds, are nations sharing the divine system with humans and will all be gathered before their Lord.

Ontological Unity between Humans and Animals

The phrase except that they are communities like you is like a melody conveying the unity between humans and other beings. Despite humanitys lofty status, it shares roots in the creation system with animals and birds. This commonality does not imply absolute similarity but existential linkage and shared accountability before the Creator. Humans, like branches of the tree of creation, share roots and destination with other creatures.

Existential Transformation of Creatures

The Holy Quran, by referring to the transformation of creatures, alludes to the wondrous order of creation. Creaturesfrom snakes to frogs and spidersemerge from one another within a cycle of transformation and evolution. This perspective, which aligns with biological findings, acts as a mirror reflecting divine order in the transformation of beings. Such transformations signify divine wisdom and the coherence of the creation system.

Humans and the Nasnas: Existential Link

Humans, in ancient times, resembled the nasnasa half-human entitythrough evolutionary stages leading to their current status. However, this verse warns that neglect and degeneration may cause humans to regress to lower states. The nasnas, like a shadow, reminds of humanitys primitive origins and the peril of downfall. This concept calls humans to vigilance and preservation of their vicegerency on earth.

Critique of Bestial Behaviours in Humans

Despite outward civility, some humans descend to the level of nasnas through behaviours such as violence and disbelief. This degeneration resembles a fire consuming human essence and distancing it from its exalted rank. The Holy Quran, through this critique, calls humans to reassess their deeds and return to their innate divine nature.

Summary of Section Two

Verse 38 of Surah Al-Anm, by elucidating ontological unity among humans and other creatures, highlights the perfection of the creation system and the responsibility of all beings. Humans, despite their elevated station, share existence with other creatures and must be vigilant against regression to animalistic levels. This section invites reflection on ones connection with the cosmic system and efforts to maintain human dignity.

Section Three: The Holy Quran, a Book Beyond Human Sciences

The Holy Quran as a Revealed Scripture

The Holy Quran, like a radiant gem, transcends human sciences and requires faith, knowledge, and profound contemplation for its comprehension. This divine book articulates truths that limited human intellect cannot fully grasp. However, such incapacity is not due to deficiency in the Quran but rather the limitations inherent in humanity.

Key point: The Holy Quran is a revealed scripture whose understanding depends on faith and knowledge. It encompasses sublime truths beyond the scope of human sciences.

Encouragement to Recite the Holy Quran

The noble tradition Recite whatever of the Quran is easy for you acts like a torch illuminating the path in darkness. This hadith invites humans to recite the Quran even without complete understanding, while emphasising that deep comprehension is a higher stage requiring spiritual preparedness. Recitation is a key that opens the doors of divine mercy.

Human Incapacity to Fully Comprehend the Holy Quran

Due to intellectual limitations and human neglect, full and comprehensive understanding of Quranic sciences remains beyond reach. This incapacity is like a shadow cast over the light of truth, preventing complete benefit from this pure spring. Religious knowledge, though a step towards comprehension, requires suitable conditions and a prepared mind.

Summary of Section Three

The Holy Quran, like an infinite ocean, contains knowledge dependent on faith and learning for its understanding. Reciting it, even without full comprehension, is valuable, but profound understanding elevates one to higher levels of knowledge. This section invites humans to strive for insight and benefit from Quranic guidance.

Section Four: Critique of the Definition of Human and His Behaviours

Critique of the Definition of Human as a Rational Animal

The traditional definition Man is a rational animal acts as a chain that diminishes humans to a rank lower than their existential truth. Rational speech is but one characteristic of humans and not a sign of their perfection. Humans, more than speaking animals, are beings who through intellect and faith can attain the status of Allahs vicegerent.

Comparison of Human Speech and Animal Sounds

Humans distinguish themselves from animals by their capacity to speak, but this distinction lies only in mode of expression, not existential essence. The cow, with its sound, and the camel, with its unique calls, each communicate in a silent language. A human endowed with speech, yet devoid of intellect and faith, may fall below animals.

Critique of Bestial Behaviours in Humans

Some humans, through acts such as cannibalism and violence, degrade themselves below animals. Such behaviours are a black stain upon human essence that distances them from their lofty rank. This critique calls for reassessment of deeds and return to pure divine nature.

Critique of Meat Consumption and Promotion of Vegetarianism

In some perspectives, meat consumption is likened to eating animal filth, and vegetarianism is proposed as a purer and more ethical path. This critique invites reflection
