Interpretation: The Spiritual Power of Man in the Light of Verses from Surahs Hijr, An-Nahl, and Al-Isra

of Nekounam Session 1740

Preface

The Holy Quran, like an inexhaustible and crystal-clear spring, contains profound knowledge that guides humanity towards self-recognition and connection with the Origin of existence. This treatise, by reflecting upon selected verses from Surahs Hijr, An-Nahl, and Al-Isra, explores the spiritual capacities of man and, through a mystical perspective, elucidates the pathways to attaining spiritual authority as presented in this divine scripture. The focal point of this analysis is the concept of "nafakhtu fhi min r" (I breathed into him of My spirit) and the divine faculties granted to man, including mastery over creatures, acquisition of esoteric knowledge, and progression towards exalted stations of nearness to God. This work endeavours to provide a deep and structurally coherent analysis that portrays the meanings of the verses in a lucid and dignified language, reflecting, like a mirror, the true essence of human existence in the light of the Holy Quran.

Part One: Surah Hijr The Divine Spirit and Spiritual Authority

Verse 29: Nafakhtu fhi min r and the Spiritual Capacities of Man

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ
When I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down before him in prostration.

This verse, akin to a golden key, opens the gateway to the truth of human existence. The phrase "nafakhtu fhi min r" refers to the divine spirit breathed into man, which distinguishes him from other creatures. This spirit is the fountainhead of mans boundless faculties, including knowledge, dignity, inner revelation, and the power to master the cosmos. Unlike beings such as the jinn (specifically the malevolent ones devoid of this divine spirit), who incline towards wickedness and bloodshed, man, endowed with this divine gift, possesses the capability to ascend to the highest peaks of knowledge and nearness.

The divine spirit is the core that guides man to the station of Khilafatullah (Gods vicegerency). This spirit instils the capacities for revelation, dignity, and spiritual vision in every human, yet its blossoming requires self-purification and profound self-knowledge. Religious sciences must revive these capacities for man to reach elevated spiritual ranks.

From a mystical perspective, this divine spirit is like a light shining within the human nature, directing him towards the station of Khilafatullah. The innate potentials for inner revelation, dignity, and spiritual insight have been entrusted to all humans; however, this precious gem lies buried beneath layers of heedlessness and impurity. Religious sciencesespecially the science of self-knowledgemust act as a trowel to remove these layers so that the essence of human existence may shine forth. Through self-purification, man may reach such a level that angels prostrate before him, not out of compulsion, but in recognition of the grandeur of his divine spirit.

The Difference between Man and Jinn in Power and Intellect

Man, endowed with intellect and faith, has the capability to subjugate beings such as the jinn, who, despite their physical superiority, lack the depth of wisdom and rationality. The Quran elsewhere (Surah An-Nahl, verse 12) mentions the subjugation of celestial and terrestrial creatures for man. This mastery is not merely material exploitation but also spiritual dominion and utilisation of heavenly forces. Mans intellect and will act as reins controlling powerful but less rational creatures. Religious sciences must nurture this capacity in humans so that through connection with the divine spirit, they may attain spiritual authority.

Mastery over creatures is the fruit of connection with the divine spirit and acquisition of spiritual authority. Religious sciences must revive the sciences of self-knowledge and mastery to enable man to reach this exalted station.

Verses 40 and 41: The Sincere Servants and the Straight Path

He said: "My Lord, because You have led me astray, I will surely adorn for them on earth, and I will mislead them all, except Your sincere servants among them." He said: "This is a straight path for Me."

These verses mirror the impotence of Satan against the sincere servants. The sincere ones are those who walk the straight divine path with purity, cleanliness, and commitment to what is lawful. The phrase "hdh irun alayya mustaqm" points to a path that leads directly to the Divine Truth, not merely to the path of those who have received Gods favour. This path serves as a bridge that elevates man from the earthly realm to higher worldsa bridge constructed with sincerity and intimacy with the Holy Quran.

The straight path is attained through sincerity and self-purification. It leads to the acceptance of prayers, empowerment, and dominion in the world. Religious sciences should place this path at the heart of their educational agenda.

From a mystical viewpoint, the sincere servants are those whose hearts have been cleansed from all but God, reflecting the divine light like a polished mirror. This station is not exclusive to prophets and imams; every believer committed to lawful deeds and avoidance of the forbidden may attain it. Religious sciences must instruct students in this path to safeguard them from satanic influence and to reach spiritual authority.

Verse 99: Worship until Certainty Arrives

وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِينُ
"Worship your Lord until certainty comes to you."

This verse, like a blazing torch, illuminates the path of continuous worship until the attainment of the station of certainty. Certainty is the state wherein the Divine Reality itself approaches the servant, as if God manifests within his heart. This station transcends the paths of those favoured and the straight path, for in it man attains direct divine presence.

Certainty is the immediate presence of God in the servants heart. This station is the fruit of sincere worship and intimate association with the Holy Quran. Religious sciences must prioritise this supreme goal in their curricula.

From a mystical standpoint, certainty is a summit reached after a journey of worship and self-purification. It is not attained by outward exertions alone but through sincerity and direct intimacy with the Divine. Religious sciences should present this path as the ultimate educational objective so that humanity may reach this exalted rank.

Summary of Part One

Surah Hijr, like an open book, displays mans boundless capacities in the light of the divine spirit. "Nafakhtu fhi min r" is a testimony to mans divine faculties for reaching exalted stations including inner revelation, mastery over creatures, and attainment of certainty. The straight path and worship until certainty are routes leading man to divine proximity. Religious sciences must revive self-knowledge and teach these pathways to cultivate humans who shine like stars in the firmament of knowledge.

Part Two: Surah An-Nahl Mastery and Spiritual Authority

Verse 2: The Descent of Angels with the Spirit

"He sends down the angels with the Spirit by His command upon whom He wills of His servants, [telling them], Warn that there is no deity except Me, so
