Interpretation: The Spiritual Authority of Man in the Light of Luqman's Wisdom

of Nekounam, (Session 1765)

Preface

Surah Luqman, one of the Meccan chapters of the Holy Quran, centres on the sage teachings of Luqman and delineates a comprehensive blueprint for attaining the spiritual authority of man. This Surah, relying upon concepts such as purity of heart, proximity to God, and the removal of internal and external obstacles, opens a pathway towards human perfection. In this treatise, through a profound examination of the verses of this Surah and inspired by wisdom-focused teachings, the spiritual authority of man and its attendant challenges are elucidated. The present text, employing the refined Persian language, endeavours to present these concepts with full fidelity to detail and a coherent, scientific structure, inviting the reader to contemplate the depths of Quranic knowledge.

Section One: The Pillars of Mans Spiritual Authority

Purity of Heart: The Foundation for Receiving Divine Wisdom

The spiritual authority of man rests upon three fundamental pillars: purity of heart, divine purpose, and the absence of internal and external anomalies. Purity of heart, akin to a spotless mirror, serves as the ground for the manifestation of divine knowledge. This purity signifies liberation from any form of inner turbidity, distortion, and impurity such as pride, arrogance, and self-exaltation. The human heart, like a vessel exposed to the corrosion of time, requires continual cleansing to be able to reflect the light of wisdom.

Purity of heart, like a crystal goblet, attains the capacity to receive the illuminations of divine wisdom only through freedom from the rusts of pride and prejudice.

And We bestowed wisdom upon Luqman: Give thanks to Allah. And whoever gives thanks, gives thanks for the benefit of his own soul; and whoever is ungrateful, indeed, Allah is Independent, Praiseworthy. (Luqman: 12)

Luqmans wisdom, rooted in gratitude and monotheism, is established solely within a pure and unblemished heart. This purity, like crystal-clear water, washes away any darkness from the human psyche and prepares it to receive divine knowledge.

Proximity to God: The Ultimate Aim of Human Perfection

The divine goal, as the ultimate objective, guides man towards existential unity and perfection. This proximity, like a lofty summit, requires relentless endeavour and complete surrender to divine will. The Holy Quran states:

And whoever submits his face to Allah while being a doer of good then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold; and to Allah is the outcome of all matters. (Luqman: 22)

Submission of ones countenance towards God implies the complete orientation of human existence towards the divine ultimate, accompanied by benevolence and virtue. This surrender, analogous to clutching a firm rope in the course of mountaineering, necessitates courage and perseverance.

Proximity to God, like an unreachable peak, is attained only through complete surrender and benevolence; and adherence to the firm handhold prevents spiritual downfall.

Removal of Connected and Disconnected Anomalies

Connected (internal) and disconnected (social) anomalies, like rust on the mirror of the heart and society, obstruct the realisation of spiritual authority. Internal anomalies include doubt, polytheism, and moral distortions; social anomalies comprise prejudice, tribalism, and cultural adulterations.

And when it is said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed, they say, No, but we shall follow what we found our forefathers doing. Even though Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze? (Luqman: 21)

This verse identifies adherence to ancestral traditions as a chain that prevents acceptance of the truth. Removal of these anomalies necessitates self-awareness and spiritual striving.

Summary of Section One

The spiritual authority of man depends on purity of heart, proximity to God, and the removal of internal and external anomalies. Purity of heart prepares the ground for receiving divine wisdom, proximity to God leads man to existential unity, and the removal of anomalies paves the way towards perfection. These three pillars, like the columns of a grand edifice, uphold mans spiritual authority.

Section Two: Obstacles to Spiritual Authority

Connected Anomalies: Doubt and Polytheism

Connected anomalies, rooted in the human psyche, include doubt, polytheism, and moral distortions. Polytheism, as a grave injustice, is emphasised in Luqmans counsel to his son:

And [mention, O Luqman], when he said to his son while instructing him, O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice. (Luqman: 13)

Polytheism, like a dark shadow, disrupts mans existential unity. Doubt, by generating scepticism in beliefs, prevents wisdom from settling in the heart. These anomalies, like wounds upon the human psyche, require continuous healing.

Disconnected Anomalies: Prejudice and Tribalism

Disconnected anomalies, rooted in social structures, encompass prejudice, tribalism, and cultural adulterations. These anomalies, like rust upon society, hinder the acceptance of divine truths. The Holy Quran states:

And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening book [from Him]. (Luqman: 20)

This verse portrays baseless disputation and prejudice as impediments to truth. Ethnic biases and social adulterations divert man from the path of perfection.

Social anomalies, like chains binding societys feet, prevent man from accepting divine truths and require cultural purification.

Summary of Section Two

Connected and disconnected anomalies act as barriers on the spiritual path, impeding mans attainment of perfection. Doubt and polytheism disturb inner unity, while prejudice and tribalism disrupt social unity, thereby weakening spiritual authority. Overcoming these obstacles requires self-awareness, spiritual endeavour, and cultural refinement.

Section Three: Divine Authority, the Greatness of Creation, and Human Negligence

Divine Authority: The Existential Basis of the Universe

Divine authority, as the existential foundation of the universe, manifests in the subjugation of the heavens and the earth for mankind. The Holy Quran states:

Have you not seen that Allah has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth and perfected His favour upon you both apparent and unapparent? (Luqman: 20)

This verse illustrates divine authority in bestowing apparent and hidden blessings upon man. This authority, like a radiant sun, illuminates the cosmos.

The Greatness of Creation: An Invitation to Reflection

The greatness of creation invites man to contemplate the system of existence. This greatness manifests in the vastness of the heavens and the
